Finding a Design Job
Everyone knows it; finding a new job can outright suck. And moving to a new city while trying to find work is a very daunting task–especially for designers. Since I decided that I would make the move to Tampa, FL back in February of 2012, I started gathering a list of design companies that I would like to apply to. There was one major drawback, however: I had no idea what I was doing. I was a girl from Cincinnati, OH not knowing a thing about this city I was going to move to in July (yes, it took me that long after I made the decision–it was a huge deal). So I did one of the easiest things to do: I googled the hell out of Tampa. What did I come up with? Not much, guys, not much. I found a few, but they were “big box” companies that didn’t really pique my interest. There was a silver lining, though: I have compiled a pretty decent list of places to look for design jobs that are currently hiring. Or, if you’re like me, I like to email companies just to see if they are hiring. Sometimes blind faith can lead to something great.
1. Behance
This is probably my favorite site. There are a lot of great companies that use this site and I like how most companies also keep their portfolio on there as well. Then you can really see what kind of work they do without being overrun by all of the info on their website.
2. Coroflot
I have to admit, I am not a fan of saying this website out loud just for the sheer fact that I’m not sure how to pronounce it correctly. I feel like I’m saying it wrong…hence the reason I am writing it. Again, like Behance–this is a big one where you can also put your portfolio up as well. I have noticed that this has a little more entry-level positions than mid to high level, but it is still worth a look.
3. AIGA Design Jobs
AIGA is the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design, so of course this would be a #1 stop for jobs! Not to mention, their site is pretty cool and has a lot of inspiration to look at as well.
4. Krop
Like Coroflot, this one has a weird name–but I have no problem saying this one out loud! This site is very clean and concise Hey, you need a job, look at our list right here…on the front page.
5. LinkedIn
As much as the younger generation may not agree, I find that more and more people are getting on LinkedIn and using it as a professional resource. Just the other day, one of my design connections with whom I haven’t spoken to in a couple of years asked if my company was hiring as her friend was just recently laid off. We went through several emails back and forth and told her how I moved to Florida and was looking as well. Lo and behold, she had a lead for me down here! I also found 3 other companies that were hiring in my field and applied. So, if you don’t agree with me that it’s a wonderful tool then that is your opinion. It has worked for me, and countless others I know. Try it. You’ll be glad you did.
There are many others as well like Smashing Magazine, How Design, and Computer Arts, it all depends on where and what you’re looking for. In my extensive search, these 5 are my biggest allies and I thought I’d share my plight. And hey, if you’re hiring feel free to stay on this site and look around.
